Last week I made my first custom bib. I’ve made a few bibs in the past for friends where I choose fabric that reminded me of them or added their child’s initial, but this is the first time I did a special order. My friend, Stephanie, requested a bib with skulls and her friends’ baby’s name. I think it turned out cute. I hope they like it.

Blue Waves

The cool blue fabric in this bib and many others was once part of a Halloween costume when my husband dressed as a tsunami. One of my friends pointed out that the pattern looks like marbleized paper. It always makes me think of the ocean, so the bibs I make with it are usually water related.

Braggin’
March 11, 2009 · 1 Comment
I don’t usually toot my own horn, but lately I’ve felt compelled to brag about my bibs. My daughter is almost 15 months old, so I’ve been using bibs for over a year now. Mine are my favorite for several reasons:
1. The fabrics I use resist stains better than the terrycloth bibs you usually find in stores because food doesn’t get stuck in the fibers.
2. The colors stay bright and pretty after lots of washing.
3. The snaps I use make it difficult for babies to remove the bibs themselves. The usual velcro type bibs are easy for babies to rip off.
4. I know how much love and care goes into the construction of each bib.
My Favorite

This is my favorite bib I’ve ever made. I love the map fabric and airplane outline together, and the bright blue color is perfect. It makes me want to go on vacation. The fabric was from Aunt Liz’s estate sale purchase,. Unfortunately, there was only enough fabric to make one bib.

Applique

To commemorate my daughter’s birthday, I made a pillow with an applique elephant that I copied from her birth announcement. That inspired me to make applique bibs. Her are the first few, but there will be more to come.

Here are the first two bibs with buttons. I’m so excited about these vintage buttons! They’re beautiful, and they’ve been waiting for decades to be reused.

Buttons!

Last weekend, while visiting my mom, I discovered a bag of vintage buttons. Most of them came from my grandma, and many of them are antiques. As I’m sure you know people from my grandma’s generation didn’t waste things. Anytime a piece of clothing got too worn to wear the buttons and other fastenings and embellishments were removed for use on another garment. I’m really excited about honoring that history and incorporating these buttons into my designs.

Gift Sets

A few of my friends are having babies soon, so I decided I would make them all bibs with coordinating gift items. I decided matching burp cloths were a good idea because, like bibs, you can never have too many burp cloths. I also made a a little bird to match one set. My friend Mei sent me the bird pattern a few months ago. It’s a really great way to use up little pieces of fabric. Mei made a beautiful mobile with her birds. You can get the free pattern here or search the blog at Spool.
